STORE&GO: objectives achieved

The STORE&GO project (EU H2020) has come to its end. Within the project, a year and a half ago, on September 27th, 2018, was inaugurated in Troia (FG, Italy) the first Italian CO2 methanation plant, in which HYSYTECH has constructed the LNG purification and micro-liquefaction system.

From a technological point of view, the objectives have been achieved.

First of all, thanks to the STORE&GO project, we can boast the first reference plant in Italy for Power-to-Gas and the first plant in the EU to produce LNG from synthetic methane.

During the demonstration phase, in fact, the plant operated continuously, completely automatically and unmanned, reaching the operating hours objectives required by the project, combined with a very positive performance from a technological point of view.

Thanks to the integration of the purification and liquefaction plant, is was possibile to achieve a conversion of over 99.5% for the captured CO2, a conversion and effective use H2 over 99.9%, with the production of renewable LNG with a CH4 content greater than 99%.

STORE&GO has therefore demonstrated that methanation, that is the production of methane from hydrogen and carbon dioxide, can support the balancing of the power grid and, at the same time, produce a zero net-emission fuel or even negative.

In general, these results demonstrate more and more that Power-to-Gas is required as a building block in further transforming the energy system toward zero GHG emissions.
