The SUNCOCHEM project (EU H2020) closes with a very important milestone: the installation and demonstration of the first system worldwide that integrates carbon capture and utilization towards oxo-products through the photo electroreduction of carbon dioxide.
The consortium met from October 21st to 23rd for the final meeting and event of the project at Eurecat's premisis in Tarragona, Spain. The final results and outcomes of the project were shared among the partners and with external stakeholders from the scientific community; our R&D specialist Freddy Liendo had a speech about the scalability of photo electrochemicals reactors and their economic potential to produce added-value products by utilizing CO2.
During the meeting, the consortium visited the TRL5 prototype developed and constructed by HYSYTECH and installed in Amposta, Spain.
In the context of the SUNCOCHEM project, HYSYTECH has been responsible for the engineering, scale-up and manufacturing of the process and of the self-biased photo-electrochemical reactor prototype, which will be used to convert three different important chemical precursors (limonene, butene e formaldehyde) into high-added value products (LimoxalTM, Valeraldehyde e glycolic acid), using waste CO2 from industrial flue gases and solar energy sources.
LimoxalTM is a fragrance ingredient produced by the project partner IFF, Valeraldehyde is a flavour ingredient produced by the project partner DOW, instead glycolic acid, a large used building block in the chemical industry, is of interest of the project partner Avantium and will be used for several applications like dying and tanning (textile), flavouring agent (food) and emulsion additive.
