OCEAN project: the demonstrator is ready!

On April 23rd the M42 of the OCEAN project (EU H2020) was held on-line. Progress of the different WPs, tasks, deliverables and milestones were discussed.

The project partner Avantium presented the successful completion of the manufacturing of the OCEAN demonstrator for the conversion of CO2 into formate. A big achievement for HYSYTECH and Avantium, who have designed and built the unit with the support of other partners.

Additionally, the progress of the development of the innovative reactor for the conversion of formate to oxalate has been presented.

The OCEAN demonstrator is a protoytpe electrochemical reactor (TRL6) that will operate with a stack of electrochemical cells of about 0,2 m2 at current densities of at least 1,5 kA/m2 to convert 250 g of CO2 per hour.

The reactor, a one-of-a-kind electrochemical cell protoytpe, has been developed within the OCEAN project and is the result of knowledges and iterations performed in other EU H2020 projects (like Celbicon and Terra).

Demonstration of the technology will be performed at the site of the project partner RWE, an industrial electricity provider, using a real CO2 stream.
