Suncochem & Recode - To convert the waste CO2 from industrial flue gases

SUNCOCHEM

On November 9th and 10th, the M18 meeting of the SUNCOCHEM project (UE H2020) was held on-line. During the meeting the results of the development of materials, such as photoelectrocatalyzers, membranes and ionic liquid electrolytes, were presented.

HYSYTECH is responsible for the engineering, scale-up and manufacturing of the process and of the self-biased photo-electrochemical reactor prototype, which will be used to convert three different important chemical precursors (limonene, butene e formaldehyde) into high-added value products (LimoxalTM, Valeraldehyde e glycolic acid), using waste CO2 from industrial flue gases and solar energy sources.

LimoxalTM is a fragrance ingredient produced by the project partner IFF, Valeraldehyde is a flavour ingredient produced by the project partner DOW, instead glycolic acid, a large used building block in the chemical industry, is of interest of the project partner Avantium and will be used for several applications like dying and tanning (textile), flavouring agent (food) and emulsion additive.

RECODE

On November 17th the M52 meeting of the RECODE project (EU H2020) was held on-line. During the meeting the state of construction of the four units that make up the final demonstrator was discussed.

HYSYTECH presented the layout and the construction status of two units: the unit for capturing CO2 from flue gases of the cement factory and the unit for converting CO2 into Formate and Glyoxylic Acid. As part of the project, HYSYTECH will also build the CO2 to Oxalate conversion unit and the integration of all the processes.

The RECODE plant will be installed at TITAN (cement industry based in Greece), will treat around 100 Nm3/h of flue gas and produce chemicals and materials from thre captured CO2.
